What do Andrew Mooney and Ryan Hipwood have in common?

They’re both past winners of the Waves Black Knight Freesurfing Awards (held in tribute to Mickey Dora’s ongoing legacy).

The event’s been an absolute hit since its 2007/2008 conception. This year, eight surfers will be required to submit two short video clips (one in late 2010 and one in early 2011) coupled with related magazine editorial. You’ll also notice that many of this year’s contestants are also well versed in the competitive arena; this is true in the fact that there’s not many athletes left these days that purely devote themselves to one discipline alone. It’s pretty much a requirement of the modern day professional surfer that they be able to adapt to any discipline.
