What is the best thing about freesurfing as opposed to comps?
“The best thing about freesurfing is that you get to stay out longer than 20-30 minutes and you can catch whatever wave you want.”

How will your Black Knight video submission separate itself from the other guys clips?
“My clip will be different because it might have a little skit at the start to show my acting talent and then some different destinations to the other guys.”

What’s one of the main goals you have in the freesurfing realm?
“I guess a big goal in the freesurfing realm would to get a main section in a big movie guess or chase surf magazine covers. Both are pretty sick.”

Are there any destinations you want to tick off your list to get some diversity in your footage?
“I just went to P-Pass (Guam) and got some really fun waves, but if I could go anywhere and get pumping waves I’d love to go to Mexico.”

Which freesurfers do you find inspiring?
“There are heaps of good freesurfers out there, but I think the best surfers in the world are on tour.”

What’s more important to you: good photos and videos or a few comp victories?
“A mix of both. Watching a good clip of yourself feels pretty good or even just having a hell session, but I also really like the feeling when the hooter goes at the end of a final and you’ve won. That’s probably more satisfying to me.”

Do you think the gap between freesurfing and comps has narrowed due to the antics of people like Jordy and Dane?
“The surfing in the last few World Tour events with the new format has changed how people surf heats. A lot of people are opening up and surfing like they’re freesurfing. It would be good to see that format all the way down to juniors, but it would take too long to finish a comp.”

How do you think freesurfing will remain fresh and current?
“Freesurfing will always be a big part of surfing. 90 per cent of shots in mags are freesurfing and almost 100 per cent of videos are freesurfing. So with that in perspective, freesurfing will never get old.”
