What is the best thing about freesurfing as opposed to comps?
“The best bit about freesurfing is the freedom. You have no time limits like heats and you don’t have to surf-to-a-criteria and have people telling you how to surf. You can do whatever you want and you can try whatever you want.”
How will your Black Knight video submission separate itself from the other guy’s clips?
“My section will hopefully be short and sweet. I’m into more hardcore punk music, so it will be fast and upbeat. Living on the north coast means there’s gonna be fottage from a few right points and sandbars.”
What’s one of the main goals you have in the freesurfing realm?
“My main goals would have to be to get the dopest shots and make the best sections I can.”
Are there any destinations you want to tick off your list to get some diversity in your footage?
“I’d like to go to do a few road trips within Australia. I want to visit places like South Oz and Vicco. Overseas, I think some random places would be cool. You’d get some different scenery in there and some weird places.”
Which freesurfers do you find inspiring?
“Do you classify Dane Reynolds as a freesurfer? I think he is, so I’d have to say him. Also Chippa is doing some pretty nuts airs. Julian Wilson and Yadin Nicol are up there too.”
What’s more important to you: good photos and videos or a few comp victories?
“I’ve always wanted to be known as a good surfer; not just someone who wins comps. I think having good sections and good photos is important. Plus it’s much more fun and more enjoyable filming and shooting in good waves than grovelling in crappy slop.” |
