What is the best thing about freesurfing as opposed to comps?
“It’s the freedom of not having pressure applied to you. I’m not really much of a freesurfer, but these days no one really realises how hard it is to be a freesurfer. There’s so much time and effort being put in to try and build your profile. Hats off to those guys for keeping surfing entertaining.”
How will your Black Knight video submission separate itself from the other guy’s clips?
“I don’t honestly have a clue what anybody is doing, so I can’t really relate to anyone else’s section.”
Are there any destinations you want to tick off your list to get some diversity in your footage?
“Not really. I just want to get good waves. I’ve been trying to mix it up in various locations around Australia, so I guess I’ll just try to do the best I can.”
Which freesurfers do you find inspiring?
“I really like Craig Anderson. He has the best style and does crazy stuff. Mitch Coleborn is another freesurfer I’m digging. I’ve been watching him dominate comps for years and now he’s become an awesome freesurfer who blows minds in every one of his video sections. It definitely opens your mind to that avenue of surfing.”
What’s more important to you: good photos and videos or a few comp victories?
“ That’s such a hard question, I love the feeling of winning, but to have a good video section and good photos is also pretty sick. It’s important to try and mix it up and have all three.”
