What is the best thing about freesurfing as opposed to comps?
“What isn’t good about free surfing? You’re out there with nothing to worry besides what fun stuff can you do one the next wave. And there’s comps… You’re trying to surf how people want you to surf. There’s no fun in being a robot.”

How will your Black Knight video submission separate itself from the other guys clips?
“I just hope I get people pumped to go surf fun waves and enjoy what free surfing is all about.”

What’s one of the main goals you have in the freesurfing realm?
“I’m not sure what goals there are to free surfing other than building a profile which is really cliché to say. I would just say surfing pumping waves with my mates and trying cool new tricks is my goal.”

Are there any destinations you want to tick off your list to get some diversity in your footage?
“There are so many destinations in the world that offer multiple world class waves; scoring them just depends on timing everything right and being well planned. I’m thinking a trip to Bali is on the cards for some footage and a rocking time.”

Which freesurfers do you find inspiring?
“I find Dane reynolds pretty inspirational. He goes out and smashes everything, comps and freesurfs. Also Ryan Glen’s massive hack-attack. Fuck, I don’t reckon he’ll let that one go to print.”

What’s more important to you, good photos and videos or a few comp victories?
“I love a competition and have been doing contests all my life, but right now I’m feeling that it’s more important to get some quality footage for people to enjoy and good photos in good waves. Following the worst waves in the world around on the World Qualifying Series just seems stupid right now.”

Do you think the gap between freesurfing and comps has narrowed due to the antics of people like Jordy and Dane?
“Yes, the gap has narrowed substantially thanks to people like Jordy and Dane taking their freesurfing ability into competition. But the judges need to adapt also. You can’t go scoring one  good air- reverse as good as a wave that’s been absolutely destroyed by someone else.”

How do you think freesurfing will remain fresh and current?
“Freesurfing is the forefront of surfing itself. Guys aren’t going to be innovating new moves whilst trying to get scores. You need somewhere to practice and to master an art, let your imagination run free and freesurfing is that practice. People surf to enjoy the feeling. That will never die. That’s why freesurfing will always be fresh and current.”
