The Drug Aware Pro presented by Rusty held at Margaret River is starting in the next few days. In fact it begins on the 16th March and runs until the 21st March. Alongside the WQS contest is the MASS festival-Music, Art, Surf and Style. If your not in West Oz to check out the event's happenings, you can watch the event here or on Fuel TV.-Sam
Taj didn't say this at all. We completely made it up
Taj Burrow- 15.57 > Jordy Smith- 12.56
Taj Burrow just took out the Quiksilver Pro held at Snapper Rocks ahead of Jordy Smith. To be honest, it was a slow, boring start to the final with Jordy holding down the lead. The momentum swung at around the 15 minute mark of the heat with Taj staging his comeback. With two high scoring waves caught in quick succession, Taj had his hands on first place. With three wins from the last three contests this could finally be Taj's year. This could be the year he finally wears the wedding gown.-Sam
CJ Hobgood can wrap his head around this oop, just not the new tour.

Everyone seems to be a little in the dark about the new changes happening to the ASP Men’s World Tour. No one really has a solid grasp on the new concept that is being introduced halfway through the year. Waves caught up with CJ Hobgood for a quick chat about the changes being implemented this year:
What are your thoughts on the changing of the world tour?
I think it’s a great question. I think the surfers know about as much as the fans do. We don’t really know how it’s going to work as of yet. It’s going to be weird on what they're going to tweak and change. Like anything though, when things change, it takes roughly a year or so for the dust to settle and for it to make sense. It's big transition going from two tours to one tour. You’re going to have some hiccups with people on both ends. I think it’s a weird one. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.
Will the changes made to the ASP affect you?
I don’t really think so, at least not to a certain degree. If you're surfing well, I think results will come and things will work out. It’ll iron itself out; it might just take a little while. It'll affect me in the short term for sure. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Do you think the change is a step forward for surfing?
I think it’s a move. I’m not sure how much of a step forward it is. I guess in a year or two we will be able to see the things that we didn’t see earlier. We could see benefits and disadvantages that no one else saw. You’ve also got people on both sides on the fence. We're all waiting to see how it pans out.
Will so-called “boring” surfers be culled?
I reckon they'll be fine. The good thing about the tour is that good surfing has always come through. A couple of years ago, there was a major change in the criteria and the judging of good surfing. I guess everyone will be okay if they're surfing well enough. The ASP has such a good system in place that good surfing will always prevail.
With Mundaka being taken off the tour, are there any locations you would think should be on tour?
I would love to go back to Fiji. It’s a bit expensive but everyone loves the place. I actually wish G-Land was still on as well. Honolua Bay, where the girl’s competition is held is a sick wave also. I think the Rip Curl Search contests are a step in the right direction. You only have to look at the Portugal event, it’s now on the tour this year. I guess if the spot is worthy enough and the sponsorship money is there, it could be held anywhere.- Sam Paterson
There isn't much to write about this video apart from the fact that Paul Fisher knows how to make us laugh. Watch him rip into the worlds best at the ASP Banquet Ball in this clip. You can read Waves' version of the night below.-Sam
The Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks was Craig Anderson’s first WCT event. He received a wild card entry and was thrown straight into the deep end. After losing his first round heat, Craig drew Bobby Martinez in the second. He lost. Waves actually think Craig got ripped off on one of his waves during the heat. So, we caught up with him to have a quick chat about it.
Are you going to ditch the free-surfing campaign now you’ve surfed a WCT event?
Nah, I don’t think so, I’m just floating around at the moment. It was a really good experience though. I was so nervous during my first round heat that I couldn’t make a take off. There were thousands of people on the beach and I was wigging out because I was so nervous.
Craig - taking to the skies. Unfortunately the conditions didn't allow
Craig to bust out this kinda shit in his heat.
Photo: Bosko
What was your game plan surfing against Bobby Martinez?
I knew I had to get the best waves in the heat because I knew I didn’t stand a chance against him. He has one of the best backhands in the business and I just went out there to try and get the best waves. I got one alright wave but I just couldn’t back it up.
Did you feel you got ripped off?
I saw the replay on TV and I’m not too sure that I was. Everyone is entitled to their opinion as to whether I got the score or not. That’s why I don’t really enjoy surfing in contests. I don’t think I got ripped off, that’s the judge’s job; they know what they are doing.
Was it as cutthroat as you expected?
Yeah it was. I don’t really enjoy surfing in contests because I get so nervous. It was a good experience being put in the contest but there is no way that I could handle the whole scene.
How was surfing Snapper with only one other guy?
Yeah, that was epic. I enjoyed that the most, even though I was shitting myself. The first round was pumping behind the rocks. It was four foot and just mental. Then the second round was just two foot and so much fun. There was no one out but there were so many people watching which made it worse (laughs).
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
I’ve got a few trips planned, just a bunch around Oz. I’ll be doing a lot of filming as well so I guess it’s just the same old. - Sam Paterson
Above you'll find two new teasers to upcoming surf flicks. The first, Scratching The Surface with Julian Wilson. The second is a creative test for Globe's forthcoming untitled flick. Both have been covered pretty extensively online so there isn't a whole lot that can be said that hasn't been said already. Umm, that's all.
Last night was the ASP banquet on The Goldy. For those of you who aren't aware it's an event where last year's world champs, rookies of the year, most improved and a fuckload of other ripping huis get crowned. Waves was lucky enough to be there. Well, at least one of us was. Waves editor Ryan "Nugget" Glen rolled back into Sydney this morning smelling like syphilis and wet dog with a bunch of random stories from the night. Originally, he was going to relay tales of the night through a series of text messages, much like Lindsay Lohan once did for GQ (or Esquire, or Details) a few years back. Did we succeed? Fuck no, but here are the text messages anyway.
Ryan Glen 6.30pm - "Mate, someone just stole our hire car keys at The Point (Burleigh). They threw 'em in the bush. No shit. Fuckin rattled. They must have thought we were weekenders brah."
Ethan Smith 7.06pm - "You're an idiot. Send me some decent messages."
Ryan Glen 7.49pm - "That's a real story, you fuckin punish. It was heavy. Me and the boys were stuck in the carpark. I was proper rattled. Heavy."
Ethan Smith 7.50pm - "I know I spoke to Huck (Waves Ad poof). You're fucking retarded. Don't trip over (insert famous pro surfer's name) cock on the red carpet."
Ryan Glen 9.43pm - "Wow, the fish is wicked. Coco Ho is awesome. Proper. Andy is here. Rad. Mick and Occy win best-dressed. I'm jealous of Occ's pony-tail."
Mick and his lovely wife Karissa. Mick won the best dressed award according to Waves Ed.
Ethan Smith 9.45 pm - "That's awesome. Who is being a c**t? Which pro surfer's chick has the best cans?" (Nugget didn't respond).
Ryan Glen 10.03 pm - "Steph Gilmore is a marketer's steamboat. Gorgeous."
Ryan Glen 10.04 pm - "Fuck. I meant to write dreamboat. Fuckin iPhones. I don't know what's weirder, she's a steamboat or a marketer owns her?"
Ethan Smith 10.06 pm - "Stupid. How many people have you wanted to punch in the face so far?"
Ryan Glen 10.15 pm - "I just punched the air to signal how much I'm fuckin lovin' tonight. Smithy (Waves photog Nathan Smith) reckons he wasn't gonna drink until he say what was here. Now shit's changed."
Ethan Smith 10.20 pm -"Whose speech has sucked a left fig?"
Ryan Glen 10.45 pm - "Your speeches are shit. Wanker. Dane just won most improved. His speech was way better then anything you've ever said or anything you've ever written. The mag better be finished tomorrow."
Ryan Glen 11.00 pm - "Mick was crowned World Champion. Steph was crowned women's world champion. I can honestly say I didn't see that coming."
Ryan Glen 11.27 pm - "The after party has moved next door. Gonna smash holes in the d-floor."
Ryan Glen 12.06am - "Dane gave Col Bernasconi (former Waves staffer, now Tracks online editor) his Most Improved trophy. He's walking around the casino with it. You'd have to kill him to get his hands off it. The trophy looks like a giant marble."
Ryan Glen 3.13 am - "Back at home. Hucker is trying to order a pizza in the intercom. Fuck off."- Ethdog
Jordy grabbing with a hinge that may be currently be deemed useless.

Earlier this week I caught up with Jordy Smith for an in-depth, incisive and exclusive interview (hold out for next month’s stellar issue). Jordy spoke frankly and openly. He told me about his new life in the OC (that’s Orange County, Californ-i-a) and how’s he’s been shooting hoops and riding SUPS with Hollywood funny man, Owen Wilson. We also talked about snowboarding, training, world titles, fashion (he ain’t into it), Dane Reynolds, freesurfing vs. competitive surfing, family, friends, Africa and booty shaking.
Under intense interrogation Jordy let it slip that he’s preparation for the imminent Quiksilver Pro includes a bunch of non-surfing because... deep breath here...the (unofficial) best freesurfer in the world is... that’s right, you heard it here....injured.
“We’ve been keeping it under wraps a bit but... it’s all good. I chipped my elbow during a training session and I haven’t been able to surf much since.” The training session was on terra firma, at a Red Bull athletes camp, Project Air, in early February. A purpose built skate ramp with adjacent foam pit was utilised to improve team riders air skills. Jordy showed typical restraint and self-preservation during the exercise. “I did an air, went too big, overshot the foam pit and landed on the other side.”
I don't know what to write here. Sick shot but.
Photo: Bosko
We talk about the dodgy hinge and Jordy reflects that elbows aren’t that important in surfing. Then, when I ask if he’s been surfing, he tells me you kinda need functioning elbows in order to paddle and stand up. So, no, he hasn’t been surfing.
“It’s still sore. I haven’t been able to surf. But it’s getting better. Hopefully it’ll be okay for the comp.”
Without examining the elbow in question and going to uni and getting a medical degree we cannot offer an authorative opinion about wether or not Jordy will be in shape for the first WT event of the year. We can only hope, like Jordy, that he will be. Cause if there’s one guy that’s worth watching hucking lines Snapper, all animal instinct and raw fucking power, it’s Jordy Smith. - Kirk Owers
The Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks is the first event on the 2010 ASP men's World Tour. Waves caught up with two non-contestants: Brent Dorrington (a local) and Damien Wills (a blow-in) to get an outsiders perspective into first contest of the year.
Who is looking the goods for the contest? BD: When I’ve been free surfing I’ve seen Bede Durbridge a lot and he has been ripping. He’s looking on top of his game. Fuck, I’m going to have to say Parko though. He’s looking as sharp as ever. But you never know who will win the first contest. Everyone is back and ready to go.
DW: Well I reckon a couple of people because I’m biased (laughs). I think Ace always surfs really well up here. He did really well last year and his backhand looks even better this year. He is looking really sharp and he has overcome his injuries so he’s back to 100%. Wilko was also surfing really good at the Burleigh ‘QS. He was fast and sharp, but that's how he always surfs I reckon. Other than those two, Taj was absolutely tearing at Burleigh. The Firewire boards he has been riding look incredible as well.
How does the Superbank look? BD: I think it’s starting to get better. It seems to be getting better every week with each new swell we have. A couple of months ago it was shit house, but now it’s really starting to look sick.
DW: I think the bank looks really good at the moment. If we get a nice little bit of swell, the comp should have pumping waves. There have been some sick barrels behind the rock and some nice walls running down to Greenmount. A month ago, the bank didn’t look that good but now it's looking so much better.

Has anyone flagged their preparation and been partying? BD: Fuck, there's been a few guys out on the town lately. We went out the other night and a couple of guys from the ‘CT were pretty loose. They were all going pretty mad.
DW: Wilko and I partied pretty hard last week (laughs). We’ve been doing a bit of training this week and getting all of his boards ready for the comp. It’s the same with everyone I think. They've all been pretty focused and getting ready for the comp. I haven’t noticed anyone getting a bit loose. I think Wilko surfs better hungover anyway though (laughs).
Who has been the standout for both surfing and partying? BD: I guess I would have to say Kai Otton. He was going mad and doing pretty well for himself. I saw him the next day and he was ripping as well.
DW: Definitely Wilko. We had a solid night during the contest at Burleigh that was pretty funny. We were staying down at Rainbow Bay and we drove Wilko’s bus up to the carpark at Burleigh. All of the boards and everything we needed was in the bus. We ended up heading out to the Swell Tavern and stayed there until three or four in the morning. We came back and crashed in the bus and had pole position all ready for the contest (laughs). Wilko had one of the first heats that morning and he smashed it. I’ve never seen anyone do that before.

Can you give us a rundown of the night when half the surfing world attended at Elsewhere (club in Surfer's Paradise)? BD: From what I can remember, all the guys were there from the comp. Taj was definitely there because he'd won the comp. It was good to see everyone on fire and going mad. There were a couple of dance-offs here and there which was pretty funny.
DW: That was a pretty epic night. Taj and all the boys were out but it was such a hot and sweaty night. Everyone got on the dance floor. It was classic seeing everyone out, having a bit of fun and getting loose. - Sam Paterson
When planning a surf based road trip, there are certain dynamics that need to be considered. "Will there be waves?" "Have I packed the right boards?" "Is there a spare tyre?" A lot of luck is usually involved making it all come together. Josh Kerr and Asher Pacey nail the aspect of road tripping as they score epic waves a few hours south of the Gold Coast. Watch the vid to see how it all unfolded-Sam
Here are the gay laws of surfing. I drew them when I was bored shitless in a meeting with our Ad reps. It was way more amusing then listening to them. Click on them to see a bigger picture.
Making your own profile flick can take it outta ya. Julian Wilson's been filming for his debut flick "Scratching The Surface" for roughly the last 12 months, and this clip's all about him enjoying some recent down time in his Sunshine Coast backyard. Keep your eye out for the film's release in late 2010. -Sam
The days of surfers drinking and partying the night before an event are done – for most dudes anyway. Waves caught up with Central Coast World Tour surfers Adrian "Ace" Buchan and Matt Wilkinson to see how they're preparing for the upcoming 2010 Gold Coast Quiksilver Pro:
What has your preparation been like leading up to the first event?
Wilko: Yeah, it's been pretty good actually. I've had a bunch of boards that I’ve been trying out. I've been trying to spend as much time in the water as I can, focusing mainly on my backhand for Snapper. I've been doing a little bit of training, but mainly I've been trying to surf heaps.
Ace: It's going good. It's always exciting getting back in to the swing of things after a break. Everyone has stepped it up with what they're doing to prepare in terms of training and fitness. Everyone is different though but for me personally, I've just been trying to really look after my body, I guess I have to with my injuries. I've really worked on my equipment over the break so that I feel more comfortable on my boards. This year I think we’re going to see more guys experiment more than ever, especially with shorter boards. I don't think people are as nervous to try different equipment after seeing Dane and Kelly being rewarded for it.

Can you give a quick rundown of your training regime?
Wilko: I've just been kinda cruising. I've just been doing the standard Push-ups, sit-ups, skipping and a little bit of boxing. You know? The usual kind of training shit.
Ace: I try and stretch everyday and use the Swiss-Ball. A lot of the guys on tour now travel with Swiss-Balls and I'm lucky I've been using one since I was aged 16. I have my own little routine on the Swiss-Ball which helps me when I'm away. I try and get in the gym a lot when I am home to mix things up. We’re surfers, so I guess time in the water is the most important thing. We have some good waves at home so I've been trying to put the hours in the water.
Do you think mental training is crucial?
Wilko: There’s definitely a lot of psych that goes into it. I guess confidence is a key, so I have been trying to work on that. If your confidence is up, you surf 10 times better.
Ace: In any elite sport the mental side of things is really important. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't know how to put to use and make it your advantage it won’t serve you that well. It's definitely a crucial part in surfing especially when you’re surfing man-on-man heats. The WT can be held at some really inconsistent places and some of the heats can be like a game of Chess... you've got to be smart and use your priority to react to certain situations.
Wilko's a fresh face on the 2010 World Tour. Photo: Bosko
Have you changed your training since last year?
Wilko: I've definitely been looking into my boards a lot more. I've become a lot more serious since qualifying as well. I wasn't really doing any training at all on the WQS so it's been a big step.
Ace: Each year I try and look at the things I can improve on. This year I think it's about stepping up the fitness aspect. I'm over all of my injuries which is great and hoping to prevent them. I'm really hungry to perform well in the big events this year and hopefully win a few events. It's going to be exciting as well with all of the new faces on tour.
How are you going to approach the first event?
Wilko: I've been thinking about it heaps. I don't really know how I'm going to approach it. It's going to be different surfing the 'CT rather than the WQS with the man on man format. I'm just going to be patience and try and surf smart heats.
Ace: I want to come out of the gates really firing. I want to try and emulate the same intensity that I've shown over the last few years. I'm just going to use the same formula that I've used. I feel really comfortable on my backhand up there so I want to try and attack it a bit more. I want to try and add a bit more flair to my surfing this year and I think with the new guys on tour it's going to be really important this year. -Sam
Check out this little teaser to the Margaret River WQS event that kicks off on the 16th of March. This year it'll feature six days of surfing, art, fashion and music. Gyroscope, Cog and Tame Impala are even playing. If you're in WA and don't attend then you're a fuckin idiot. Simple.
Andrew Mooney's and Jimmy Kinnaird's collaborative film project One Month On The Moon will hit stands next month on the cover of Waves. A week or two ago the duo came into the Waves office and gave us a sneak peek of the thing. It was sick. Like, really sick. Anyway, Mooney was on crutches when he showed it to us after his dorsal nearly sawed his hoof off. The above flick shows how it happened.
You may recognise the handy work of Tom Jennings from 2008's Rusty flick, Changes or from Ry Craike's profile that was released with Waves about six months back. Well, Tom recently collated all his best footage from 2009 and made this dope little clip. We hope you dig it.
There's not much surfing in this latest video post from Josh Kerr. Instead he reflects on 2009 and talks about his 2010 plans. Also check out the latest issue of Waves (on sale tomorrow, Feb 17) where Kerrsy says about losing his 2010 injury wildcard to Neco Padaratz: "I understand why they gave it to him, but it's definitely not a move forward for surfing."-Sam
Current Australasian Pro Junior ratings Leader Mitch Crews (Currumbin, Qld) recently won the North Stradbroke Oakely Pro Junior. Waves caught up with him for a quick chat.

The monkey’s finally of your back.
“I never felt as if it was there, I was just spewing that I hadn't won an event. I had come so close in the other contests, but I wouldn't say there was a monkey on my back. I just wanted to win one.”
Tell us about you post celebration night at Coolangatta’s Neverland nightclub...
“Fuck, I don't know what happened. I got home and all of my mates came ’round to my house for a few drinks. Sure enough I got carried away and we ended up at Neverland. Jack Freestone ended up carrying me outta the joint – he even ended up calling my mum to come get me.”
What are you spending your $9,000 on?
“I don't really know. I want to get a jet ski. I might just put it away to try and save it to do the right thing.”
What's your magic formula for this year? (Mitch's worst result to date is a third).
“I wasn't expecting to do this good, especially with everything that happened at the end of last year (Mitch was diagnosed with arthritis in his spine). I've just been remaining positive. I’ve been having fun in my heats pretending they were free-surfs and it's paying off.”
Are you keen for a collaboration rap album with Waves?
(Laughs) “I love rap. Everyone knows that. I wouldn't say that I'm the sorta guy that says rap is the best ever. I try to listen to everything but I do really enjoy listening to rap. I'll definitely be keen on doing a rap album with you guys.”
You love basketball. When do you get your “Like Mike” basketball shoes?
(Laughs) “It's funny you say that because Nat Young (Santa Cruz, California) has been staying with me and he rides for Nike 6.0. He has an account with Nike and it's some ridiculous amount so he was nice enough to let me get some product. I ended up ordering a whole new basketball setup with Lebron James shoes and whatnot. I'm fucking frothing, I can't wait for it all to arrive…” - Sam
